Understanding your results
These numbers are estimates. Actual energy needs vary with body composition, activity, health, and other factors.
How does the calorie calculator work?
This calculator estimates your basal metabolic rate (BMR) using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. BMR represents an estimate of energy used at rest. It then multiplies BMR by your selected activity factor to estimate total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).
What are maintenance calories?
Maintenance calories are the estimated amount of energy needed to keep your weight relatively stable over time. They are a starting estimate rather than a precise daily requirement.
What happens when I select a weight goal?
Weight loss subtracts 300 kcal from estimated maintenance needs. Weight gain adds 300 kcal. These are illustrative adjustments, not guaranteed weight-change rates or personalized nutrition plans.
How accurate are the results?
Equations estimate population-average energy needs and can differ from an individual's actual requirements. Activity multipliers add further uncertainty. Changes in weight over several weeks may help you evaluate whether the estimate is suitable.
